在人对世界的认知被数字化的今天，建筑除了继续其古老使命——为人类脆弱的身体提供庇护——它在构建“个体-社会-自然”之间关系过程中的必要性不降反升。2020年以来席卷全球的公共卫生事件更凸显了物理空间在社会生活中扮演的无可取代的角色。基于健康原因对个体的隔离反而唤起了人的身体对自由地活动、自由地交往与自由地探索的渴望。建筑正是处于这一意识觉醒的震中。它是使用者行为的呼应、延展、或者对抗。建筑通过“占据”来赋予“自由”。

如此的建筑是理念的结晶，而非图形表达的道具。建筑要面对复杂的自然与人文环境，因此其每一个楼层平面、每一个立面、每一个组件都映射“在地”的问题。这决定了它们必然是各显神通甚至相互矛盾。因此建筑不是一个简单的“完形”精致盒子，不应通过一些决定性的角度去观看和评价。建筑更像是一个灵活多变的介质，映射其周遭不断变化的自然与人文秩序，并通过揭示它们让项目超越庸俗实用主义的陷阱。

There is emerging necessity of architecture in our time when sensational interactions between human and environment are largely digitalized. While architecture continues to carry its everlasting mission- sheltering human’s fragile bodies- its role in Individual- Social- Nature relations become increasingly important. The sweeping global incidence of public health since 2020 is strengthening physical space’s position all the better in social lives. The quarantine on personal life evokes body’s desire on freedom of activities, freedom of social interactions, and freedom of explorations. Architecture is at the very epicenter of this wakening. It is its users’ behaviors’ reflection, extension, or resistance. Architecture give Freedom via Taken.

Forms of architecture as such are crystalized outcomes for ideology, instead of tools for mere visual expression. The complex natural and social context which architecture faces ask each floor plan, façade, and component to reflect individual on-site issues. Architecture thusly escapes the fate to be exquisite box that can only be watch and criticized from certain angles. Architecture is more of a metamorphotic medium, which constantly reflect and reveal uncharted surrounding natural and social orders, so to let project free of superficial pragmatism.

YES.arch is an architecture office which was founded at Beijing in 2018. Its past projects span across boundaries among various programs as well as geography. With its professional collaborators, the office is dedicated to design renovation, as well as offering characteristic solutions towards different issues.
